South Sudan on the brink of relapsed civil war

South Sudan signed a peace treaty in 2018 to end its five-year civil war, but refugees in Uganda have feared returning. Now, tensions are rising, and violence has broken out as the power-sharing agreement between President Salva Kiir and Vice President Riek Machar falls apart.

Right now, as I write this, the UN believes war is about to start again in South Sudan. Today, the Vice President—who led the opposition in the last civil war—was arrested. If war breaks out, the violence could be worse than before, fueled by revenge.

Your gifts have helped sustain the most vulnerable refugees in Uganda as they have waited for violence to end in their home country. South Sudanese refugees in Uganda have always warned that it was too dangerous to return home. They heard of pockets of violence throughout the country and feared another war. It seems they were right to wait.

Thank you for your support of their decision to stay safe in Uganda. We currently have a shipment of food on its way to Juba. Please pray that the food container, carrying 280,000 meals, safely reaches Juba to help the refugees and returnees who need it most. Please also pray for our ministry partners in Juba. Ask God to protect them as they serve others in Jesus’ name during this difficult and dangerous time.
